Understanding CMR (Riser) and CMP (Plenum) Cables
CMR (Riser) and CMP (Plenum) cables are both used in building wiring, but they differ in their fire resistance and suitability for different spaces.
-
CMP (Plenum Rated): Designed for use in plenum spaces — areas used for air circulation such as HVAC systems or drop ceilings. These cables are made with fire-retardant materials that produce minimal smoke, meeting the strictest building codes for safety.
-
CMR (Riser Rated): Used for vertical runs between floors or within walls (non-plenum spaces). While CMR cables are still flame-resistant, they do not meet the same smoke emission and flame spread requirements as CMP.
If you're installing in air ducts, ceilings, or ventilation systems, choose CMP. For walls, risers, or non-airflow areas, CMR is the cost-effective and code-compliant choice.
